Maintaining and expanding South Dakota's excellent business climate requires that policy makers, elected representatives and government officials have a working knowledge of our state's expanding companies. The Sioux Falls Development Foundation is helping to connect legislators and other officials to regional corporate executives through the Development Connections program.
"This new program is an element of the Development Foundation's Business Retention and Expansion initiative," said Bob Mundt, Sioux Falls Development Foundation President and CEO. "The Development Foundation's board of directors identified a goal of providing educational events for elected officials during its strategic planning session which led to the creation of the program."
Development Connections is designed to connect policymakers at the local, state and federal level with existing Sioux Falls area businesses to highlight expansion opportunities through legislative and policy actions. The program utilizes conference room discussion and business facility tours guided by the company's executive team. Location tours are only part of the information-sharing process. With community leaders gathered together, time is set aside for discussion with the company's executive level management team on policy and legislation which can lead to expansion opportunities.
Two Development Connections events have already taken place, at Bell, Inc. and Glanbia Nutritionals in Sioux Falls, with two more events scheduled during 2019. The events included individual introductions by the Development Foundation, company history and an overview of business operations, facility tours with multiple tour guides, and a discussion period between company executives and elected leaders on legislative issues and business growth.
Program events have connected participating businesses with almost 50% of the area's elected officials or staff members from their offices, with representation from the State Legislature, Sioux Falls City Council and Mayor's office, Minnehaha and Lincoln County commissions, the Governor's office and all three Congressional offices.
"We anticipate the Development Connections program will create opportunities for positive relationship building and sharing of information between business leadership and policy makers," said Mike Gray, Sioux Falls Development Foundation Director of Business Retention and Expansion. "In partnership with our advocacy groups, the Foundation will utilize the knowledge shared and connections gained through the program to help our existing businesses continue to be successful and to expand in South Dakota."
