Sanford Research: A transformational gift of $400 million by T. Denny Sanford is enabling Sanford Research to become one of the premiere research institutions in the U.S. and the world. Sanford Research is composed of several research centers, including Cancer Biology, Cardiovascular Health, Health Disparities, Methodology and Data Analysis, Sanford Children's Health, and the Sanford Project — finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.

For more than a century, the Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota has set the standard for medical education of students, residents and professionals in the state. The school's mission includes education, research and service and emphasizes family practice to help create the next generation of doctors for the state. The school's economic impact includes attracting $17 million annually in research funding as well as hosting two of the four 2010 Research Centers designated by the governor.  Third- and fourth-year students learn at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center, Sanford USD Medical Center and Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Sioux Falls, or hospitals in Rapid City or Yankton, South Dakota.

Area residents enjoy and support an unusually wide range of cultural activities. Sioux Falls is rapidly becoming a showcase of the arts in the Upper Midwest. Community arts organizations include the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, Civic Fine Arts Association, the Sioux Falls Arts Council, the Sioux Empire Community Theatre, the Children's Theatre Company of South Dakota and the Siouxland Heritage Museums.

The Washington Pavilion of Arts & Science features a state-of-the-art performance hall, a multi-use "black box" theater, an OMNI theater, visual arts galleries and a Science Discovery Center with interactive exhibits.

SculptureWalk is an exciting exhibit of over 50 outdoor sculptures displayed year round along the sidewalks in downtown Sioux Falls. Each year the exhibit displays new sculptures from artists around the world.

The Multi-Cultural Center provides opportunities to learn, celebrate and share through cultural experiences. They sponsor the Festival of Cultures at Falls Park and numerous other ethnic celebrations throughout the year.

Sioux Falls offers an endless variety of youth sports activities!  From the ever popular summer pastimes of baseball/softball and golf to junior football . . . from synchronized swimming and soccer to figure skating . . . from indoor soccer and hockey to basketball and volleyball through our local Y . . . from peewee wrestling to snowboarding lessons; Sioux Falls has it all!

Our local colleges, high schools, YMCA, YWCA and medical facilities offer a number of sports camps and clinics throughout the year in addition to conditioning, acceleration and power training.  Sioux Falls is an active community dedicated to providing endless opportunities for our youth.

Sioux Falls is the gateway to many recreational areas throughout the state. To the north is the glacial lakes region, excellent for water activities and camping. To the west and south stretches the Missouri River, providing beautiful scenery and an unspoiled atmosphere. South Dakota's walleye fishing on the Missouri River is considered to be the best in the United States. In the autumn, the most popular form of outdoor recreation is hunting. In South Dakota, known as the ring-neck pheasant capital of the world, tens of thousands of hunters bag their limits each season. There is also high quality waterfowl hunting in the state.
